Seçkin Pirim Sculpture Exhibition Titled “Timely-Timeless” at Baksı Museum
iGA Istanbul Airport`s center of arts and culture, İGA ART Gallery, is hosting Mehmet Kavukcu`s solo exhibition, "Nature". The exhibition, curated by Professor Gülveli Kaya, features videos, photographs, and objects that the artist created over time, that are associated with the February 6 earthquakes that brought our country down with grief.
iGA Istanbul Airport, Türkiye's gateway to the world, continues its mission of being an art center where different cultures meet and interact, as well as being the most important global hub in the region. The exhibition, displaying a selection of artist Mehmet Kavukcu's videos and photographs from different periods, along with the objects he gathered from the Hatay earthquake site, was named "Nature" and focuses on the paradoxical interaction between man and nature and the consequences of that interaction.
Professor Gülveli Kaya, curator of the exhibition bringing "man of nature" against "the nature of man," hosted at the İGA ART Gallery, said: "While a man of nature is faithful to nature, accepting its rules, living in peace and harmony as a part of it, thus appreciating and savoring the beauties of nature, it is shown that a being in peace with nature goes against man's nature."
"Thank you, World..."
Artist Mehmet Kavukcu brings the items and objects he collected from the Hatay earthquake zone together in his "Nature" exhibition, for everyone to see, touch, and feel. Istanbul Airport, an international space, sees this exhibition as an opportunity to thank people from all over the world for their sympathy and support towards the earthquake region.
The message of the exhibition where Kavukcu offers three performances taking place at different times and spaces is "Man is alone without his tools. He harvests, gathers, and carries everything by himself. Sometimes he drags whatever he can gather from nature to a city center or a remote location."
Journeys that lead to different experiences...
While expressing his gratitude to have Mehmet Kavukcu's artistic creations displayed at İGA ART, Kadri Samsunlu, CEO of iGA Istanbul Airport, said:
"Having reached the 200-millionth passenger threshold, a significant milestone at our airport, we wish for every visit to transform into a journey that leads to different experiences. As we accomplish our goal through İGA ART, we consider iGA Istanbul Airport to be Türkiye's arts & culture gateway to the world. At iGA Istanbul Airport, a global transfer hub, we welcome hundreds of thousands of passengers from various countries every day. We believe hosting notable, high-profile exhibitions for our visitors is a huge step in promoting artists, our airport, and Türkiye itself."
A monument is being built in the nature exhibition, to remember those suffering from the earthquake.
Reminding everyone that we are still trying to heal the wounds of this earthquake as a country, Professor Hüsamettin Koçan, Chairman of the İGA ART Executive Board, stated that the exhibition is a means of facing our memories of the earthquake.
Stating that İGA ART, which aims to host guests with different psychologies and goals in a cultural and artistic environment, puts long-term projects on its agenda that will bring aesthetic richness and help share its knowledge in Türkiye; Professor Koçan continued, "İGA ART Art Gallery is one of these projects and Mehmet Kavukcu's Nature exhibition has a content that can be the agenda of international sharing. Mehmet Kavukcu, who has been creating art around these themes throughout his life, in places such as Erzurum, which is extremely far from the center of the world of art, has managed to explain the relationship between nature and man using a different language and sensitivity, by isolating himself despite his liking of nature and its prejudices, in a world where earthquakes, environmental pollution, and alienation between man and nature are at their peak. We are glad to share the great artistic journey of the master, Mehmet Kavukcu, in the international area, as an artist who turns frozen trees into ice sculptures in the winter, travels into nature in snow and sleeps alone in a bed, gets lost in garbage dumps, brings dead wood to society's attention by moving them to the city center, and builds a monument for the wounds and the negligence of the earthquake by moving the ruins of the earthquake region to Erzincan, another earthquake region. We thank our artist for displaying his work at our venue, and congratulate him."
Koçan highlighted that by bringing objects and items gathered from the earthquake site to the İGA ART Gallery, Kavukcu allowed the audience to feel empathy towards this catastrophic event.
